Houston Baptist Huskies (1), Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (2) - September 7, 2014 Cancelled

Houston Baptist University Huskies (1), Oral Roberts University Golden Eagles (2)
September 7, 2014
1:00 pm at Sorrels Field, HBU, Houston, Texas
Canceled in the first half due to thunderstorms
Southland Conference vs Summit Conference
National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I

Oral Roberts' Kayla Nsien (4) has her hands full marking one of this blog's favorite strikers Natalie Hager (13)

Connor Ryder (7) finds herself one-on-one with goalkeeper Maddie Rhodes (00).
Connor plays through Maddie's challenge,...
...hits the deck and pounces on the loose ball...
...as Norwegian sophomore defender Maria Stordahl (28) scrambles to provide late coverage.
Connor's goal tied the match up. ORU's Megan Guico would score a go-ahead goal just before the game is called due to thunderstorms. To view the full abbreviated match photo album, click Houston Baptist vs Oral Roberts.

Texas Longhorns 5, Nevada Wolf Pack 1 - August 31, 2014

University of Texas Longhorns 5, University of Nevada Wolf Pack 1
August 31, 2014
2:00 pm at Mike A. Myers Stadium, University of Texas, Austin, Texas
Big XII Conference vs Mountain West Conference
National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I

Texas' Lindsey Meyer (4) uses her 6'0 frame to get her head on the ball off a corner...

...sending it towards the far post...

...to Brooke Gilbert, who smacks the ball into the net.

Brooke's strike opened the floodgates on a five-goal Longhorns frenzy. Click Texas vs Nevada to view the entire match photo album by Kokoy.

Chrisalyn Fonte (20) bursts past Lindsey Meyer (4)...

...to combine with Daisha Jones-Oglesby (15)...

...on a give-and-go that splits the Longhorn defensive line...

...leaving them in the dust.

Brilliant play frees Chrisalyn from the crowd and turns her loose inside the box...

...where the All-Mountain West midfielder finishes her run with a perfect strike...

...past the lunging All-Big XII goalkeeper Abby Smith.

Chrisalyn Fonte would finish her senior season at Nevada tied for fifth in career goals (12) and second in shot attempts (139).

A perfectly placed free kick by Arkansas's Claire Kelley sails just past the outstretched fingertips of Ladyjacks keeper Morgan Glick and into the back of the net. It was one of only three SFA losses in the 2014 campaign, two of which were against top 25 teams (#9 Texas A&M and #25 Arkansas), and the other in the Southland Conference Championship game against Houston Baptist. WE'RE BA-ACK: Houston Cougars 2, Sam Houston State Bearkats 2 (blog date: August 17, 2014)

Houston Cougars 2, Sam Houston State Bearkats 2
W-D-L: 0-1-0            0-1-0
August 17, 2014
7:00 pm @ University of Houston
American Athletic Conference vs Southland Conference
National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I

We're ba-ack...

...just when you thought that this crackpot blogger had fallen off the edge of the pitch. Just like those of you who kept clicking to check for new entries over the past 12 months or so, I couldn't resist it any longer. The lure and intrigue of this blog's subject matter is just too powerful to ignore. When life happens, and continues to happen, one must celebrate or mourn with, take refuge in or seek joy from the people and things that matter the most. Atop my short list of things is this game which has served as the catalyst to so much meaning in life, meaning that demands expression, the perfect medium of which is the beauty of the game as it is manifested by the women who have committed their lives to it. Thus we play, we fall, we rise and play on to seek the next opportunity to penetrate into the offensive third, to receive the next cross, to come back, pressure and defend, to pass, to take off down the line and to strike. The game is never-ending.

If you are no stranger to this blog, then you are probably familiar with my fascination with the idea of a cup competition between the colleges in the greater Houston area. My post-graduate alma mater the University of St. Thomas inaugurating their women's team this year makes eight college soccer programs in the fourth largest municipality in the country, including five inside the Sam Houston Beltway and three within a 90-minute drive of downtown. Eight teams is perfect for a three-day single-elimination tournament. Now that Houston has its own professional women's soccer franchise, the Dash, it makes so much more sense that such a tournament be held at BBVA Compass Stadium which both the Dynamo and the Dash call home, and proceeds from ticket and merchandise sales can go towards local charities. Alas, in the words of Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie in his famous speech during a state visit to the United States in 1968, I suspect my vision for a single tournament to determine the champions of the city "will remain but a fleeting illusion to be pursued but never attained."

In know that I've attempted this before (see blog entry dated October 19, 2013 "Underdogs Swarmed on the Road"), but in the absence of a central city-wide tournament, this blog is willing to venture nonetheless into the uncharted territory of deciding the champions of Houston using overall results and head-to-head competition. With eight college teams distributed over five different conferences, head-to-head matchups will be few. That just makes them all the more valuable and meaningful, even if the match is slated as a preseason friendly, like the opening match on this blog, a local derby pitting the inner city's flagship university against the suburban school from the northern edges of town.

Click Houston v Sam Houston State to view the full match photo album by Kokoy.

Two sophomores, Sam Houston's Jordan Jarzombek (orange 16) and Houston's Megan Goh (white 16), engage in an aerial battle. Jordan was a member of the Klein Oak High School squad that won three District championships and went all the way to the Texas State Finals in 2012. Megan graduated in the top 1% of her North Crowley High School class in Fort Worth, and her intelligence manifests itself through her creative decision-making on the field.
Sydnie Green (left) contains Maddy Panozzo (9). After transferring from Missouri at the end of her freshwoman season, Sydnie earned her spot in the Cougars' starting defense last year with hustle, intelligence and aggressiveness. Now a junior, Sydnie will have to assert some leadership to improve upon a -27 overall goal differential from her sophomore year.
This ain't no friendly. The Houston-Sam Houston derby gets physical. Ashley Fluty (26) hits the deck as Kelsey Zamora (7) plays through her. Kelsey is part of the all-senior trio in UH's striker rotation, which also features Kaylah Walker (13) and Alexis Weaver (5). The lone senior in the Bearkats' backfield, Ashley will lead a defense on a mission to win more than half of its conference matches, a feat she has yet to see since donning an SHSU jersey as a freshwoman.
Junior Mariah Titus (6), tussles with Alexis Weaver (5) and Gabrielle Rodriguez (15). Mariah was the centerpiece of Sam Houston's offense last season, netting eight for 39 shots on goal.
Local derbies such as Houston v Sam Houston State often pit former high school teammates against each other. Gabrielle Rodriguez (15) was also a member of that high-achieving Klein Oak High School team with Jordan Jarzombek.
Hannah Dauzat (8) chases Emily Edenstrom (13) in the midfield. Hannah is part of the senior contingent at Sam Houston intent upon finishing their college career with a winning record. Hannah's transfer from Louisiana Tech should bolster the Houston midfield. Hannah still holds the Cy-Fair District high school record for most career (51) and single-season (21) assists.

A double-overtime goalless draw - the Coogs' rebuilding defense containing junior Mariah Titus, a product of the US Olympic Development Program who finished last season with eight tallies to spearhead the Sam Houston State offense. Is this an indication of how evenly this upcoming season will unfold? That is just one of the many questions this blog ponders as we embark on a fresh new campaign. Will Quinney and Gabi, Lauren and Holly finally realize the destiny which Kokoy had predicted for the Rice Owls two years ago? Are they and the gelling Roadrunners of UTSA on the collision course for the Conference USA championship, as Kokoy foresaw? Will Natalie and company revive HBU's drive towards another conference championship? Will Marlyn and her crew weather yet a third coaching change in two years and finally bring TSU to the level their hustle and heart deserve to be? Will Kokoy's alma mater UST defy the odds they face in their inaugural season and surprise us all? Is this the season that a championship comes back to the inner Beltway of the fourth largest municipality in the world's most powerful country?

Or is Kokoy just full of it?

PUTTING MY CLEATS IN MY MOUTH: Cougars 0, Knights 4 (blog date Oct 25, 2013)

Houston Cougars 0, Central Florida Knights 4
W-D-L: 1-3-10            14-2-2
October 24, 2013
7:00 pm @ University of Houston

The University of Central Florida Lady Knights were going to have none of that baloney. They hit the grass at the Carl Lewis International Complex with every intent to disprove all the RPI-sceptics behind this blog (see blog entry dated October 18, 2013). They were not about to allow a sub-200 team to threaten the top-12 ranking that they have worked so hard to earn, and they were certainly not going to let some crackpot blogger out there discredit everything they have accomplished to get this far up in the national table. Certainly not after winning the Conference USA tournament in 2012 and then retaining eight starters from that squad, five of them seniors, bolstered by the transfer of junior striker Tatiana Coleman from Auburn, where she earned a spot on the All-Southeast Conference First Team last year. Certainly not after going unbeaten over the previous 13 outings leading to this Houston trip, outscoring their new American Athletic Conference opponents 18 to 6 to sit squarely atop the league standings. The Lady Knights brought a relentless game, possessing the ball overwhelmingly, distributing it all over the field, and limiting the Cougars to six total shots, only two of which were on target, while blasting at keeper Sydney George with ten on goal.

Tatiana Coleman (3) wreaks havoc in Houston's defensive third. Tatiana transferred from Auburn where she made the All-Southeast Conference First Team last year.
Combining bursts of speed with quick smart moves, Tatiana gets by even the most solid defenders like Lexa Green (30), Sydnie Green (12) and Danielle Muñoz (red 3)...
...to either set up goals...
...or score them herself. Tatiana logs two assists and a goal on the final stats sheet.

Cougar keeper Sydney George (00) has a very busy day against the likes of Megan Fish (20)...
...and a high-powered UCF offense attacking from all directions.
Facing ten total shots on target by Central Florida, Sydney George (00) spends a lot of time on the grass.
Jennifer Martin (5) takes on Courtney Dudley (26) and Shayne Clewett (4) on UCF's left flank.
Jennifer, who finished last season second on the team in goals scored, is a critical component in the Lady Knights' offensive drives.
Jennifer Martin (5) gets deep into opposing territory...
...to deliver deadly crosses, even under intense pressure. She sets up Tatiana Coleman's icer in the 64th minute.

Defender Shayne Clewett (4) has her hands full with freshwoman Kayla Adamek (6), who nets her eighth goal on the season.

Lexa Green (30), Sydnie Green (12), Natalie Juncos (26) and the rest of the Cougar defense are under heavy pressure all night from one of the most potent offenses in the country.
Amanda Wilkin (15) escapes to gain space in Cougar territory.
The Coogs manage to threaten. Alexis Weaver (5) drives against Alex Piercy (21), Ashley Nicol (2) and Conference USA's 2012 Defensive Player of the Year Marissa Diggs (32).
Ashley and Marissa anchor a Lady Knight defense that posted a school and Conference USA record 15 shutouts last year, and have allowed only nine goals over the first 18 matches prior to this road trip.

So much for my optimism since the last match on this blog - thanks to UCF, I now put my cleats in my mouth.
